The airport of Alicante is not actually located in Alicante, but in the southern area in the province of Elche which is about 11 kilometres from the city of Alicante, however it's named "Alicante International Airport" (Airport Shortcode ALC). The airport provides a modern and convenient gateway to the Mediterranean coast, serving passengers arriving mainly from the UK, Netherlands and Germany. Accessibility ranks high with car parking right outside the arrivals and departures areas. Alicante Airport is currently the sixth largest airport in Spain, and has grown in size continuously over the past years. In March 2011 Alicante airport got a brand new terminal building replacing the old two terminals.
Alicante Airport boasts a friendly and helpful staff always ready to render service to travellers. Inside the airport it is modern and spacious spread over several floors, each with all the expected facilities. The airport handles 8 million passengers each year, and the service is still efficient. There are plenty of cafe's, food stalls, bars and restaurants to choose from and a duty-free outlet is also available, with products ranging from cosmetics, toys, electronics, home items, school supplies and the like. A delicatessen also whips up snacks for some quick bites.
